Australian Ransom Junior Tag Team Surfing Championships
The Ransom Junior Tag Team Surfing Titles was surfed over 3 Saturday events starting with the Queensland title in June, July featured the NSW title, and finishing with the big Australian. 12 teams surfed in the series with four teams in the respective state titles qualifying to the Australian.

Le – Ba Rips to victory in Ransom Junior Tag Team Australian Surfing Titles
The northern rivers boardriding club Lennox – Ballina completed the NSW and Australian double Title by defeating Kirra Surfriders in the final of the Australian event on Saturday 20th August at Ransom Beach Cabarita.
Eight teams started the Australian day in 2 foot windswept surf for the inaugural Australian Ransom Junior Tag Team Surfing Title, only one could win and the NSW champs Le – Ba and Kirra the Queensland champions winning their respective semi – finals, set up a final to decide the real Australian junior team champion. Le – Ba took the early initiative when coach Joseph Sandercoch sent double whammy surfer and captain Michael Wright as lead surfer the pressure was immediately on Kirra, Wright locked in a 9 point whammy and a superb 8 pointer on his 2nd ride, in quick time.
Kirra needed to respond quickly but only could manage 10 points out of 30 for their first 3 rides, until Kirra’s 2nd surfer and Kirra’s 4th scoring wave, Jake Cumberland hit back with a 11 point double whammy. With the scores at 26 to 21 Le – Ba’s advantage, again Kirra falter and Tom Snellgrove, Le – Ba’s 3rd surfer took full advantage with a wave brace of 12 points to Kirra’s 3rd surfer’s 4 point brace despite Snellgrove earning a 3 minute time penalty in the sin bin for wave interference.
The anchor surfers for Le – Ba were now in a position to close out the final. Josh Atkins Kirra’s 4th surfer put credibility back in the score board with a tremendous 8 point wave, Nicky Hosking rode out the win for Le –Ba to be crowned the inaugural Australian champions scoring a decisive win 52 points to Kirra 45 points.
A giant soft toy gorilla was the award for the surfer of the final and this was awarded to Michael Wright (Le – Ba), also a special mention goes to Kingscliff’s Cody Klien for her outstanding surfing for the Kingscliff Black team.
